Perth Tango Club
The Club will
be holding two further canyengue workshops on Saturday. Barry is
passionate to share his knowledge of this root style of tango
introduced during December 2012. Barry has studied canyengue in
Buenos Aires with teachers Marta Anton and Manolo Salvador who are
among the leading exponents of canyengue.
About Canyengue
“The word
canyengue is of African origin. The name came into being to describe
its rhythm. It was danced from around the 1890's to the early 1930's
and is still popular today. It is one of the original root styles of
tango and contains all fundamental elements of traditional Argentine
tango. The dancers share one axis, dance in a V close embrace; with
knees relaxed and slightly bent. Canyengue uses body dissociation
for the leading; walking with firm ground contact; and a permanent
combination of on and off-beat
rhythm. Its main characteristics are its musicality and playfulness.
Its rhythm is described as ‘incisive, exciting, and provocative’.”
